US Army Greenlights Production of Speed Demon V-280 Tilt Rotor to Replace Black Hawk

Bell V-280 helicopter cemonstrator (Bell/DVIDS)

The U.S. Army has approved the V-280 Valor tiltrotor helicopter, developed by Bell, for the Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft (FLRAA) program. The V-280 was selected over the SB>1 Defiant, a joint effort between Sikorsky and Boeing. The V-280 will replace the aging UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter fleet, focusing on increased range, speed, and survivability.

The V-280 can fly at speeds over 300 knots and has a combat radius of 500-800 nautical miles. It can also carry up to 14 troops or a sling load of 12,000 pounds. The tiltrotor design allows the aircraft to take off and land like a helicopter but fly like an airplane once in the air.

The Army plans to procure over 2,000 V-280 helicopters, with deliveries starting in the mid-2020s. The V-280 is expected to significantly enhance the Army's ability to conduct long-range missions and support ground forces.
