Deadline Looms for Veterans Who Became Sick from Atomic Bomb Tests & Cleanups

Illustration by Noga Ami-rav/Stars and Stripes

A bipartisan effort has been made to expand benefits for U.S. veterans who were exposed to radiation from atomic bomb tests. The legislation, known as the Atomic Veterans Healthcare Parity Act, aims to provide healthcare and compensation to veterans who were stationed at various nuclear test sites and cleanup operations.

The bill, introduced by Sen. Josh Hawley and Rep. Mark Takano, seeks to address the long-standing issue of inadequate healthcare and benefits for atomic veterans. It would provide healthcare coverage and benefits to veterans who participated in the cleanup of Enewetak Atoll, a Pacific island used for nuclear testing and other similar operations.

This legislation is seen as a step towards rectifying the injustices faced by atomic veterans and ensuring they receive the care and support they deserve. Hopefully, the bill will be passed and signed into law, providing much-needed relief to these veterans and their families.

British Navy Sinks German Battleship Bismarck

On May 27, 1941, the German battleship Bismarck, which had previously sunk the British battle cruiser HMS Hood in the Battle of the Denmark Strait, was sunk by the Royal Navy in the North Atlantic. The Bismarck had been on a mission to attack Allied shipping in the Atlantic but was intercepted by British forces.

After the Hood was destroyed, the Bismarck was pursued by a large British force, including the battleships HMS King George V and HMS Rodney. The Bismarck was eventually crippled by torpedo attacks from British aircraft, rendering it unable to maneuver effectively. The final battle saw the Bismarck heavily outgunned and unable to withstand the onslaught from the British battleships. The ship was ultimately scuttled by its crew, and it sank with heavy loss of life, with only 115 survivors out of a crew of 2,221

The sinking of the Bismarck was a significant victory for the Royal Navy and a major blow to the German Kriegsmarine.

America without her soldiers would be like God without His angels.
