This Day in Military History
The Grand Finale of the Tet Offensive

In 1968, the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops launched a series of surprise attacks during the Tet holiday, known as the Tet Offensive. It was a bold move that shook the world and left everyone wondering,
"What the heck happened?"
Fast forward to February 22, 1968, when the Tet Offensive finally ended. It was a day that marked a significant turning point in the Vietnam War, but not for the reasons you might expect.
The Tet Offensive was a military disaster for the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces. They suffered heavy losses, with an estimated 45,000 to 80,000 killed or wounded. Meanwhile, the U.S. and South Vietnamese forces managed to repel the attacks, but not without sustaining substantial casualties of their own.
So, why was the Tet Offensive considered a turning point in the war?
Well, it all comes down to the power of perception. The Tet Offensive was a massive miscalculation on the part of the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong. They had underestimated the strength and resolve of the U.S. and South Vietnamese forces, and their attacks did not achieve the desired outcome.
The Tet Offensive significantly impacted public opinion in the United States. The images of the attacks and the high casualty numbers shocked the American public, who believed that the U.S. was winning the war. This exposed the truth that, despite the presence of hundreds of thousands of American troops in Vietnam, the war had reached a stalemate.
In the end, the Tet Offensive was a costly defeat for the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces. But, it was a propaganda victory that helped to shift the tide of public opinion in the United States. It was a classic case of miscalculation and miscommunication that had far-reaching consequences.
The path to glory cannot be followed with much baggage.
While there is still so much more we have yet to tap into, companies are still building behind the scenes. We know that through our contractors, our warfighters will be best equipped when duty calls.
