Marine Corps’ New Force Design Paying off in Operations

Marine Corps' new Force Design approaches are proving their combat-worthiness in operations, as noted by two senior generals at the Modern Day Marine Expo. These changes, part of a broader shift towards preparing for peer competitors such as China, include adding equipment like the Ground/Air Task Oriented Radar (G/ATOR), which has been crucial in recent operations.
These new approaches focus on the Marine Corps' ability to operate as a stand-in force, particularly in the first and second island chains. This is exemplified by the establishment of the 3rd Marine Littoral Regiment in Hawaii and the 12th Marine Littoral Regiment in Okinawa. These regiments are centered around sensing and striking within the range of enemy forces.
The Marine Corps is also emphasizing rapid, flexible, and opportunistic maneuvers. This doctrine is designed for winning under challenging conditions, such as those anticipated in future conflicts. The shift towards smaller, mobile teams with significant firepower for island defense underscores the Corps' commitment to adapting to emerging threats.
As the Marine Corps continues to implement and refine its Force Design changes, it is clear that these efforts are paying off in real-world operations, enhancing the service's ability to respond to crises and maintain a strong presence globally.

173rd Airborne Brigade Deploys to South Vietnam

On May 3, 1965, the 173rd Airborne Brigade, stationed in Okinawa, became the first U.S. Army ground combat unit deployed to South Vietnam. This deployment marked a significant escalation in the United States' involvement in the Vietnam War, which would go on to last for more than a decade.
The Brigade's arrival in South Vietnam was part of the U.S. strategy to counter the spread of communism in Southeast Asia.
The 173rd Airborne Brigade nicknamed the "Sky Soldiers," was composed of various battalions, including the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Battalions of the 503rd Infantry, the 3rd Battalion of the 319th Airborne Artillery, and other support elements. Their deployment was a response to the growing influence of communist forces in the region, particularly the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese Army. The Brigade's actions during the war, including a significant battle at Dak To against an entrenched NVA regiment on Hill 875, showcased their bravery and commitment to the mission.
The Vietnam War, however, would prove to be a divisive conflict for the United States, resulting in significant casualties and lasting societal impacts.
The most important thing I learned is that soldiers watch what their leaders do. You can give them classes and lecture them forever, but it is your personal example they will follow.
As the week comes to a close and summer creeps in, I hope you all are blessed and get much-needed rest. God bless.
