Rethinking US Africa Policy Amid Changing Geopolitical Realities

War on the Rocks

Authors John J. Chin and Haleigh Bartos from War on the Rocks delve into the necessity of reevaluating U.S. policy toward Africa. They argue that the current trilemma facing the U.S. in its Africa policy involves promoting democracy, combating terrorism, and competing with authoritarian rivals for geopolitical influence.

The authors stress that this approach is becoming increasingly challenging due to the rise of authoritarian regimes and democratic backsliding in the region, keeping the audience informed and aware of the changing geopolitical realities.

The report highlights the need for a nuanced approach to U.S.-Africa relations, considering the continent's complex political and social realities. It advocates for a policy prioritizing building solid relationships with African leaders who share U.S. values and interests while addressing the root causes of instability and conflict. This includes supporting economic development, strengthening democratic institutions, and addressing security challenges.

Chin and Bartos argue that a more strategic and forward-looking U.S. Africa policy is needed to navigate the changing geopolitical landscape and advance U.S. interests. They emphasize the importance of engaging with African countries as equal partners and recognizing the continent's diversity and complexity.

North Korea Accuses US and South Korea of “Espionage Spree”

North Korea has accused the United States and South Korea of conducting aerial espionage around the Korean Peninsula. The accusations were made by North Korea's defense ministry, which claimed that the U.S. flew at least 16 of its RC-135 and U-2S strategic reconnaissance planes and RQ-4B drones over the Korean peninsula between May 13 and May 25. This activity was labeled as "hostile military espionage" by the North Korean authorities.

The accusations came amidst heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula, with North Korea expressing its dissatisfaction over the increased military cooperation between the U.S. and South Korea. This includes the arrival of a U.S. submarine armed with nuclear weapons in South Korean waters, which has been a point of contention for North Korea.

In response to these developments, North Korea has warned of "immediate action" if its sovereignty is breached.

The situation is further complicated by North Korea's ongoing efforts to enhance its military capabilities. The country has announced plans to launch three more spy satellites in 2024, in addition to its first military reconnaissance satellite launched in November.

However, a recent attempt to launch a rocket carrying the second spy satellite failed, with the missile exploding shortly after liftoff. This setback has not deterred North Korea from its plans, with the country's leader, Kim Jong Un, vowing to continue efforts to strengthen the country's military capabilities.

BlueHalo, a leading player in defense technology, has unveiled a cutting-edge laser weapon system known as the LOCUST Laser Weapon System (LWS). This system fuses precision optical and laser hardware with advanced software, artificial intelligence, and processing, empowering and augmenting the directed energy 'kill chain.'

It tracks, identifies, and engages diverse targets with a hard-kill High-Energy Laser (HEL). The system is designed for agility and rapid deployment and is adaptable to multiple platforms.

The U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command has awarded BlueHalo a $95.4 million contract to advance Directed Energy (DE) prototype development as part of the Laser Technology Research Development and Optimization (LARDO) program. This contract aims to improve the performance and durability of the LOCUST laser systems, increasing their lethality against small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS) and similar threats.

BlueHalo's LOCUST LWS has been successfully deployed overseas, providing multi-domain mission success in UAS threat elimination and force protection. The system is part of a complete system that the U.S. Army invests in to mature the use of laser weapons to meet national security demands.

BlueHalo also provides full-scale Directed Energy support to its customers, including preventative and corrective maintenance and operator and maintenance team training for the P-HEL system.

Victory for the US in Cantigny

On May 28, 1918, a momentous event marked the first major triumph for the United States during the First World War. A combined Allied force, including a full brigade of nearly 4,000 American soldiers, successfully seized the village of Cantigny from German troops.

This victory was paramount as it occurred amidst a fierce German offensive and was the inaugural instance of American troops showcasing their combat prowess on a large scale.

The operation involved a two-hour artillery barrage followed by an infantry assault, with French air support and tanks aiding the American advance. Despite the high casualties, including 200 soldiers killed and another 200 incapacitated by German gas attacks, the U.S. held its position against seven German counterattacks over the next 72 hours

The capture of Cantigny not only deprived the Germans of a vital observation point but also served as a morale booster and a demonstration of the American military's capability on the battlefield.

Wars may be fought with weapons, but they are won by men. It is the spirit of the men who follow and of the men who leads that gains the victory.

General George S. Patton Jr.

He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins. - Colossians 1:13-14 NKJV
