The defense budget, a cornerstone of national security, is currently undergoing its annual dance through the corridors of power in Washington. As the fiscal year 2025 budget proposal progresses from the White House to Congress, lawmakers are gearing up for a budgetary showdown.
The President's request of $849.8 billion for the Department of Defense is just the starting point. Now, the House and Senate Armed Services Committees will scrutinize, debate, and ultimately shape the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which will set the defense policy and spending levels for the coming year.
With partisan tensions simmering and competing priorities vying for funding, the stage is set for a high-stakes battle over the future of America's military might.

A unique team of Army soldiers specializing in defusing nuclear emergencies, known as the Nuclear Disablement Team 1, recently trained alongside elite combat units, including the 7th Special Forces Group and the 75th Ranger Regiment.
The training was a rare opportunity for these specialized units to practice working together, enhancing their skills for real-world scenarios. The training occurred at a decommissioned Army pulse radiation facility in Louisiana, where the teams practiced under simulated fire, focusing on safety protocols and gear load-outs.
Steven Modugno, spokesperson for the 20th Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosives Command (CBRNE), emphasized the significance of such training, noting that it is uncommon for Nuclear Disablement Teams to train with the special operations units that would escort them in real-world incidents. The Nuclear Disablement Teams are part of the 20th CBRNE Command, the U.S. military’s premier formation for chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosives operations.
This is part of a broader effort to enhance the readiness and capabilities of these specialized teams in responding to nuclear emergencies. The Nuclear Disablement Teams, Special Forces, and Ranger units are critical in the U.S. military's strategy to deter and defeat near-peer adversaries.

i5 Space Expands to 1K Members Nationwide

U.S. Air Force Academy Cadet 2nd Class John Stevenson, i5 Space national director, delivered a presentation on the organization to ROTC cadets at other educational institutions, including the University of Oklahoma, University of Texas at Austin, and Yale University, in the Space Delta 13 detachment on May 2, 2024.
The i5 Space, a club founded by cadets four years ago, has experienced a remarkable expansion. It now boasts over 1,000 members across educational institutions nationwide. This significant growth reflects a growing interest and commitment to space-minded and air-minded education among students and educators alike.
The club's mission is to foster a community of individuals dedicated to exploring, understanding, and contributing to space and aviation. By providing a platform for collaboration, learning, and networking, i5 Space aims to inspire the next generation of leaders in these critical sectors.
With its rapid expansion, i5 Space is poised to impact the future of space and air education, equipping students with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in these rapidly evolving industries.

Redwire Takes Flight: DARPA Contract Fuels Air-Breathing Satellite Tech

Phase Four's “air-breathing” electric propulsion demonstration took place last April. (Image source: PR Newswire)
Redwire Corporation, a leader in space infrastructure for the next-generation space economy, has been awarded a contract from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to develop a revolutionary air-breathing satellite called SabreSat. This satellite will demonstrate novel electric propulsion systems in very low-Earth orbit (VLEO) using Redwire's SabreSat VLEO platform.
The contract positions Redwire as the prime mission integrator for the project, which aims to advance critical VLEO technology for DARPA's game-changing Otter program.
As the prime contractor and mission systems enabler for the DARPA Otter program, Redwire will build the SabreSat bus, advance the critical technologies necessary for the mission, and integrate, coordinate, and lead the project team. To support the program's mission planning and execution, Redwire is using proprietary digital engineering tools configured for the unique environment of VLEO.
In addition to SabreSat, Redwire's European office is leveraging its Phantom European VLEO Platform to study the use of VLEO for the European Space Agency's Skimsat program together with Thales Alenia Space UK to increase Earth observation capabilities while decreasing costs substantially. Redwire's approximately 700 employees working from 14 facilities in the United States and Europe are committed to building a bold future in space for humanity, pushing the envelope of discovery and science while creating a better world on Earth.

Spain Declares War

On this day in 1779, Spain declared war against Great Britain, aligning itself with France in the ongoing conflict between the two European powers.
This decision was a significant shift in alliances, as Spain had previously maintained a policy of neutrality.
The declaration of war came amid escalating tensions and shifting alliances in Europe, and Spain was eventually drawn into the conflict.
A competent leader can get efficient service from poor troops, while on the contrary an incapable leader can demoralize the best of troops.
